Medication or Meditation?

Updated: Jul 1, 2018

Buddha was asked, what have you gained from meditation? He replied nothing, but let me tell you what I have lost…..Anger, anxiety, depression, insecurity, fear of old age, and death. ~ Eknath Easwaran

I was once told by a doctor that I have anxiety because my "brain is just wired this way." "You were born this way and therefore will need to be on medication for the rest of your life" he noted during an appointment. That was many years ago and luckily I didn't buy what he was trying to sell. While I may always have anxious tendencies, I can say that I have not been on medication for many years now. In fact, I actually feel better than I have ever felt despite the fact that my life is harder than it has ever been. As a single mama who is starting her own company and writing a book I have more stressors and demands on my life than ever, yet somehow I manage to enjoy life and remain semi calm much of the time without medication.

How is this possible?

I think this article does an incredible job of explaining the benefits of meditation.

While meditation may require more effort than ingesting a tiny pill every morning, the benefits are numerous. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely believe that medication has it's time and place. However, it doesn't have to be a life long strategy. If you want to one day get off medication, it is ABSOLUTELY possible to find peace and serenity without it. The only reason that I know this is because I have personally taken this journey. Our brains are incredibly powerful and we have the ability to form new neural pathways and actually re-wire them.

A study was completed in our own backyard at Mission Hospital. During this study people who had never meditated had their brains scanned. They were then placed on an 8 week regiment of daily meditation and then the scans were repeated. After just 8 weeks new neural pathways had been formed.

Recently, I have had several conversations with people who want to get off medication. I am here to tell you....It is POSSIBLE and you are not the same person today who started that path. What ever you want for yourself and your life is POSSIBLE! Much love and many blessings!
